“Dye, Dye My Darling” isn’t just about color. Studio LoopLoop has developed a world-first technique that applies plant-based dyes to aluminum, pushing an age-old craft into unexpected territory. By laying materials like onion skins and madder root directly onto the metal surface during the dyeing process, they create pieces with organic patterns that seem to emerge from within the material itself. Their custom-built anodizing setup allows them to control every step, from the initial surface treatment to the final dye bath, resulting in a collection of vases, mirrors, and tables that carry natural patterns within their industrial forms.

From their Rotterdam workshop, founders Odin Visser and Charles Gateau are rethinking how things get made. The studio moves fluidly between projects, from lighting installations at the Chelsea Flower Show to modular workbenches and chandeliers, each exploring new ways to blend industrial efficiency with craft processes. While natural dyes have traditionally been reserved for textiles and other soft materials, LoopLoop’s application of plant-based dye to unconventional materials is pushing the frontiers of an age-old craft.
